How to convert density

All 5 density units are converted through a single base unit, so any unit can be converted to any other. Enter a value, choose the units and press Convert, or open a conversion page for the exact factor and a reference table.

For example, 1 kilograms per cubic meter (kg/m³) = 0.001 grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm³).

Density unit definitions

Kilograms per Cubic Meter (kg/m³)
Kilograms per cubic meter is the SI unit of density. Water is about 1,000 kg/m³ and air about 1.2 kg/m³ at sea level.
Grams per Cubic Centimeter (g/cm³)
Grams per cubic centimeter equals 1,000 kg/m³. Water is about 1 g/cm³, so this unit reads directly as specific gravity.
Grams per Liter (g/L)
Grams per liter equals one kilogram per cubic meter. Solution concentrations and gas densities are often given in g/L.
Pounds per Cubic Foot (lb/ft³)
Pounds per cubic foot is the US customary density unit, about 16.02 kg/m³. Water is about 62.4 lb/ft³.
Pounds per Cubic Inch (lb/in³)
Pounds per cubic inch is used for metals in US engineering; steel is about 0.28 lb/in³.
