How to convert fuel economy
All 4 fuel economy units are converted through a single base unit, so any unit can be converted to any other. Enter a value, choose the units and press Convert, or open a conversion page for the exact factor and a reference table.
For example, 1 miles per gallon US (mpg (US)) = 235.215 liters per 100km (L/100km). Units measured "per" each other, such as litres per 100 km and kilometres per litre, are inverse quantities and are converted exactly rather than by a fixed multiplier.
Fuel Economy unit definitions
- Liters per 100km (L/100km)
- Liters per 100 kilometers is the fuel-consumption measure in Europe and Canada: lower is better. It is the inverse of distance-per-volume units such as mpg.
- Kilometers per Liter (km/L)
- Kilometers per liter expresses how far a vehicle travels on one liter of fuel; higher is better. It is used in Japan, India and parts of Latin America.
- Miles per Gallon US (mpg (US))
- Miles per US gallon is the fuel-economy figure on US window stickers. Because the US gallon is smaller, the same car scores about 20% lower in US mpg than in UK mpg.
- Miles per Gallon UK (mpg (UK))
- Miles per imperial gallon is used in the United Kingdom. The imperial gallon is 4.546 liters, so UK mpg figures are about 20% higher than US mpg for the same car.
