How to convert time
All 17 time units are converted through a single base unit, so any unit can be converted to any other. Enter a value, choose the units and press Convert, or open a conversion page for the exact factor and a reference table.
For example, 1 seconds (s) = 0.0166667 minutes (min).
Time unit definitions
- Seconds (s)
- The second is the SI base unit of time, defined by the frequency of a transition in the caesium-133 atom. All other time units are built from it.
- Minutes (min)
- A minute is 60 seconds, and 60 minutes make an hour.
- Hours (hr)
- An hour is 60 minutes or 3,600 seconds, one twenty-fourth of a day.
- Days (d)
- A day is 24 hours, or 86,400 seconds. A calendar day can be one second longer when a leap second is added.
- Weeks (wk)
- A week is 7 days, or 168 hours.
- Months (mo)
- Calendar months vary from 28 to 31 days; this converter uses the average Gregorian month of 30.436875 days (365.2425 days divided by 12).
- Years (yr)
- This converter uses the average Gregorian calendar year of 365.2425 days, which accounts for leap years. A common year has 365 days and a leap year 366.
- Milliseconds (ms)
- A millisecond is one thousandth of a second. Network latency, camera shutter speeds and reaction times are measured in milliseconds.
- Microseconds (µs)
- A microsecond is one millionth of a second, used in electronics and high-speed timing.
- Nanoseconds (ns)
- A nanosecond is one billionth of a second. Light travels only about 30 centimeters in a nanosecond, which is why it matters in computing.
- Decades (dec)
- A decade is 10 years.
- Centuries (cent)
- A century is 100 years.
