How to convert length

All 20 length units are converted through a single base unit, so any unit can be converted to any other. Enter a value, choose the units and press Convert, or open a conversion page for the exact factor and a reference table.

For example, 1 meters (m) = 3.28084 feet (ft).

Length unit definitions

Meters (m)
The meter is the SI base unit of length, defined by the distance light travels in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second. All other metric lengths are decimal multiples of it.
Kilometers (km)
A kilometer is 1,000 meters, the standard unit for road distances and travel in most of the world. One kilometer is about 0.621 miles.
Centimeters (cm)
A centimeter is one hundredth of a meter, roughly the width of a fingernail. It is the everyday metric unit for body measurements and small objects; one inch is exactly 2.54 cm.
Millimeters (mm)
A millimeter is one thousandth of a meter. It is the usual unit for engineering drawings, paper sizes and anything measured finer than a centimeter.
Micrometers (µm)
A micrometer, or micron, is one millionth of a meter. Cells, fine particles and the thickness of thin films are typically measured in micrometers.
Nanometers (nm)
A nanometer is one billionth of a meter. It is used for wavelengths of visible light (about 380 to 700 nm) and the feature sizes of computer chips.
Feet (ft)
The foot is a US customary and imperial unit defined as exactly 0.3048 meters since 1959. It is divided into 12 inches, and 3 feet make a yard.
Inches (in)
An inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters, one twelfth of a foot. Screen sizes, pipe diameters and paper are commonly specified in inches in the United States.
Yards (yd)
A yard is 3 feet or 36 inches, defined as exactly 0.9144 meters. It is familiar from fabric lengths and the markings on an American football field.
Miles (mi)
A statute mile is 5,280 feet, defined as exactly 1,609.344 meters. It is the road-distance unit in the United States and the United Kingdom.
Nautical Miles (nmi)
A nautical mile is exactly 1,852 meters, originally one minute of latitude along a meridian. Ships and aircraft measure distance in nautical miles and speed in knots.
Fathoms (fth)
A fathom is 6 feet (1.8288 meters), a traditional unit for water depth that still appears on nautical charts.
Furlongs (fur)
A furlong is one eighth of a mile, or 660 feet (201.168 meters). Today it survives mainly in horse racing.
Light Years (ly)
A light-year is the distance light travels through a vacuum in one Julian year, about 9.461 trillion kilometers. Despite the name it measures distance, not time, and is used for stars and galaxies.
Astronomical Units (AU)
An astronomical unit is the average distance from the Earth to the Sun, defined as exactly 149,597,870.7 kilometers. Distances within the Solar System are usually given in AU.
Parsecs (pc)
A parsec is the distance at which one astronomical unit subtends an angle of one arcsecond, about 3.26 light-years or 30.9 trillion kilometers. Astronomers use it for distances to stars.
