How to convert speed

All 16 speed units are converted through a single base unit, so any unit can be converted to any other. Enter a value, choose the units and press Convert, or open a conversion page for the exact factor and a reference table.

For example, 1 meters per second (m/s) = 2.23694 miles per hour (mph).

Speed unit definitions

Meters per Second (m/s)
Meters per second is the SI unit of speed. Walking pace is about 1.4 m/s, and 1 m/s equals 3.6 km/h.
Kilometers per Hour (km/h)
Kilometers per hour is the road-speed unit in most countries. 100 km/h is about 62 mph, or 27.8 meters per second.
Miles per Hour (mph)
Miles per hour is the road-speed unit in the United States and the United Kingdom. 1 mph is exactly 1.609344 km/h, so 60 mph is about 96.6 km/h.
Feet per Second (ft/s)
Feet per second is used for projectile speeds and some engineering calculations. 1 ft/s is exactly 0.3048 m/s, and 60 mph is 88 ft/s.
Knots (kn)
A knot is one nautical mile per hour, exactly 1.852 km/h or about 1.151 mph. Ship and aircraft speeds and wind speeds at sea are given in knots.
Speed of Light (c)
The speed of light in a vacuum is exactly 299,792,458 meters per second. Nothing carrying information can travel faster, and it is used to define the meter.
Speed of Sound Air (Mach 1)
The speed of sound in air at 20 °C is about 343 meters per second (1,235 km/h). It falls as the air gets colder, so the exact value depends on conditions.
Mach Number (M)
Mach number is speed divided by the local speed of sound; this converter uses 343 m/s, the value in air at 20 °C. Mach 1 at sea level is therefore about 1,235 km/h.
