How to convert temperature
Temperature scales have different zero points, so they are converted with formulas rather than a single multiplier:
- Celsius to Fahrenheit: °F = °C × 9⁄5 + 32
- Fahrenheit to Celsius: °C = (°F − 32) × 5⁄9
- Celsius to Kelvin: K = °C + 273.15
- Kelvin to Celsius: °C = K − 273.15
- Fahrenheit to Kelvin: K = (°F − 32) × 5⁄9 + 273.15
- Kelvin to Fahrenheit: °F = (K − 273.15) × 9⁄5 + 32
Temperature unit definitions
- Celsius (°C)
- The Celsius scale sets 0 °C at the freezing point of water and 100 °C at its boiling point at standard pressure. It is the everyday temperature scale almost everywhere outside the United States.
- Fahrenheit (°F)
- On the Fahrenheit scale water freezes at 32 °F and boils at 212 °F, so one Fahrenheit degree is 5/9 of a Celsius degree. It is the everyday scale in the United States.
- Kelvin (K)
- The kelvin is the SI unit of temperature, starting at absolute zero (0 K = −273.15 °C). Kelvin steps are the same size as Celsius degrees, and no degree sign is used.
