How to convert force

All 17 force units are converted through a single base unit, so any unit can be converted to any other. Enter a value, choose the units and press Convert, or open a conversion page for the exact factor and a reference table.

For example, 1 newtons (N) = 0.224809 pound force (lbf).

Force unit definitions

Newtons (N)
The newton is the SI unit of force: the force that accelerates one kilogram at one meter per second squared. A small apple weighs about one newton.
Kilonewtons (kN)
A kilonewton is 1,000 newtons, about 225 pounds-force. Structural loads and climbing gear ratings are given in kN.
Pound Force (lbf)
A pound-force is the weight of one pound of mass under standard gravity, about 4.448 newtons.
Ounce Force (ozf)
An ounce-force is one sixteenth of a pound-force, about 0.278 newtons.
Dynes (dyn)
A dyne is the CGS unit of force, exactly 10⁻⁵ newtons: the force that accelerates one gram at one centimeter per second squared.
Gram Force (gf)
A gram-force is the weight of one gram under standard gravity, exactly 9.80665 millinewtons.
Kilogram Force (kgf)
A kilogram-force, or kilopond, is the weight of one kilogram under standard gravity, exactly 9.80665 newtons.
Kip (kip)
A kip is 1,000 pounds-force, about 4.448 kilonewtons, used in US structural engineering.
