Weight unit definitions
- Kilograms (kg)
- The kilogram is the SI base unit of mass, defined since 2019 by fixing the value of the Planck constant. One kilogram is about 2.205 pounds.
- Grams (g)
- A gram is one thousandth of a kilogram, roughly the mass of a paperclip. Recipes, nutrition labels and postage are commonly measured in grams.
- Milligrams (mg)
- A milligram is one thousandth of a gram. Medication doses and vitamin contents are usually stated in milligrams.
- Micrograms (µg)
- A microgram (µg) is one millionth of a gram. It is used for trace nutrients, hormones and very small drug doses.
- Metric Tons (t)
- A metric ton, or tonne, is exactly 1,000 kilograms (about 2,204.6 pounds). It is the standard unit for freight, vehicles and bulk materials outside the United States.
- Pounds (lb)
- The avoirdupois pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms and is divided into 16 ounces. It is the everyday weight unit in the United States.
- Ounces (oz)
- An avoirdupois ounce is one sixteenth of a pound, about 28.35 grams. It is used for food portions and postal weights, and is not the same as a fluid ounce, which measures volume.
- Stones (st)
- A stone is 14 pounds (about 6.35 kilograms). Body weight in the United Kingdom and Ireland is traditionally given in stones and pounds.
- Tons US (ton (US))
- A US ton, or short ton, is 2,000 pounds (about 907.2 kilograms). It is the ton normally meant in the United States.
- Tons UK (ton (UK))
- A UK ton, or long ton, is 2,240 pounds (about 1,016 kilograms). It was the standard ton of the British imperial system and is still used for ship displacement.
- Grains (gr)
- A grain is 1/7,000 of a pound, exactly 64.79891 milligrams. It is still used for bullet and arrow weights and some pharmaceutical measures.
- Atomic Mass Units (u)
- An atomic mass unit is one twelfth of the mass of a carbon-12 atom, about 1.6605 × 10⁻²⁷ kilograms. Atomic and molecular masses are expressed in this unit.
- Carats (ct)
- A carat is exactly 0.2 grams and is the unit for gemstone weights. It should not be confused with karat, which measures gold purity.
- Daltons (Da)
- The dalton is another name for the atomic mass unit, used mainly in biochemistry for the masses of proteins and other large molecules.
- Troy Ounces (oz t)
- A troy ounce is about 31.103 grams, roughly 10% heavier than the avoirdupois ounce. Gold, silver and other precious metals are priced per troy ounce.
- Earth Mass (M⊕)
- An Earth mass is the mass of the Earth, about 5.972 × 10²⁴ kilograms. It is used to express the masses of rocky planets and exoplanets.
- Sun Mass (M☉)
- A solar mass is the mass of the Sun, about 1.989 × 10³⁰ kilograms, the standard unit for the masses of stars, galaxies and black holes.
